Cycling on the rise in London
Cycling in London has seen remarkable growth in recent years. The number of cycle journeys in London doubled during the period 2000 to 2012.
The introduction of the TfL cycle rental scheme in 2010 added 6,000 bikes and 400 docking stations to the London cycle system. There are now in excess of 670,000 daily cycle journeys in London.
The Cycle Superhighways
With growing numbers, concerns about cyclist safety began to rise. The Cycle Superhighways were devised to provide safer, faster and more direct journeys from outer London into and across central London.
Initially 12 routes were planned radiating out on a ‘clock-face’ basis from central London. The CS1 route runs from Liverpool Street station to Tottenham.
Making CS1 a success
In May 2015 SQS were awarded the contract for the northern part of CS1, running from Ermine Road to Tottenham Hotspur FC stadium at White Hart lane.
The route which spanned a distance of 3.72 miles consisted of footway construction, surfacing, speed tables, ironwork adjustments, drainage and traffic management. SQS began work on the 6th July 2015 and finished March 18th 2016.
Quality, Right First Time Solutions
This £1.8m project was completed on time to specification and with exceptionally low defect rates.
The SQS commitment to quality ensured that the works met the standards set by Transport for London, and that the CS1 Cycle Superhighway route was able to open as planned in May 2016.
